"Being in Sigma Kappa has really shown me what Sisterhood is all about. This past semester, a sister helped me pass a class that I was struggling with. She would take time out of her hectic schedule just to make sure my homework was right as well as to make sure I understood all the material. Her unbelievable sacrifice and care for me is something I will always treasure, and I hope to do the same for other Sigma Kappa sisters in the future."
-- Elizabeth Cheung, Spring '10
Sisterhood is very important to our chapter and we do our best to demonstrate this through our programming.
One way we promote Sisterhood is by holding various Sisterhood events throughout the year. This past semester, our Sisterhood activities included a crab feast at the chapter house, going to a Nationals baseball game, going to the midnight premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, and participating in the Haunted Trail at the Field of Screams. These events not only allow the sisters to bond with each other, but also give them a break from the stresses of college life.
Another way we encourage Sisterhood is with our Big/Little Program. Prior to being matched up with a Big Sister, New Members are paired up with a Heart Sister, a Dove Sister, and a Major Match-up. These women act as mentors to the New Members, guiding them through their first few weeks of the New Member Period. Afterwards, the New Members participate in Big/Little speed dating to meet and get to know their potential Big Sisters. During the next week, the Big Sisters shower their Little Sisters with presents, eventually leading to the Big and Little Sisters making paddles for each other.
